Damon Beckhorn scored touchdowns 24 seconds part Friday night when Berwick pulled away in the last three minutes to defeat visiting Wyoming Valley West, 44-22, in a meeting between traditional Wyoming Valley Conference Big School powers.
Wyoming Valley West has stumbled to a 2-6 mark this season, but had come in with wins in the previous three meetings in the series.
Berwick, the second-ranked Big School in the NPF Football Super Six, improved to 7-1. The Bulldogs maintained their leads in the WVC Class 4A Division and the race for the top seed and home field through all three rounds of the District 2 Class 4A playoffs.
The Spartans used a pair of Zach Davies touchdowns – on a 4-yard run and a 2-yard fumble return following a strip sack – to close a 30-8, second-half deficit to 30-22.
Wyoming Valley West got the ball back with momentum after a Berwick fumble, but was immediately forced to punt.
Berwick then drove for the clincher, which came when Beckhorn took a fourth-and-four slant pass 28 yards for a touchdown with 2:59 left.
If there was any doubt remaining, Beckhorn took care of that when he scooped up an errant option pitch and ran it 15 yards for a touchdown.
Evan Klinger matched Beckhorn in scoring two touchdowns.
Klinger, who had 69 yards on 10 first-half carries on the way to surpassing the 100-yard mark, ran 18 yards for the game’s first score with 3:21 left in the first quarter.
Berwick remained on top for all but 13 seconds the rest of the way, thanks to Klinger’s 90-yard kickoff return after Wyoming Valley West had rallied to take a second-quarter lead.
The Bulldogs were still leading 7-0 when they forced a fumble by Spartans quarterback Rob Dwyer while he was trying to fight his way into the end zone from the 1.
Wyoming Valley West pinned Berwick there and partially blocked the punt. The Bulldogs covered the punt in their end zone for a safety 19 seconds into the second quarter.
The Spartans made the most of field position following the free kick. They moved 45 yards in 4 plays to take an 8-7 lead on Rob Dwyer’s 14-yard pass to Darrian Tyson.
Klinger quickly erased that lead, taking the kickoff at the 10 and avoiding the last tackler at midfield.
Berwick stretched the lead to 24-8 at halftime.
After Teagan Wilk returned a punt to the Wyoming Valley West 39, Owen Shoemaker capped a five-play scoring drive with a 21-yard touchdown run.
Kenny Marshman added a 32-yard field goal with 1:19 left in the second quarter.
Berwick extended the lead on its second possession of the third quarter.
The Bulldogs moved 47 yards in 5 plays after a muffed punt and got a 1-yard touchdown from Jared Marshman.
After missing the first 6 games of the season with a broken ankle, Marshman has 4 touchdown passes, 2 touchdown runs and a pair of 100-yard-plus passing efforts in his first 2 games of the season.
Davies started the Wyoming Valley West comeback with the run that completed a 6-play, 79-yard drive in the third quarter.
Berwick hosts Lake-Lehman (6-2) while Wyoming Valley West is at Crestwood (5-3) Friday night.
