Berwick Bulldogs at Coughlin

 Pre-Game report

Tonight Berwick starts the 2nd half of their 2017 schedule with game 6 of the season.  Berwick had a very successful 1st half of the season finishing 4-1 but took a tough loss last week to Selinsgrove by a score of 17-6.  Berwick’s 2nd string QB Alex Force who had a great first half of the season was forced to leave the game right before half time with Berwick leading 6-3. Their backup 2nd string QB, Damon Beckhorn was suspended from the game with a team rules violation so 3rd string QB Ryan Laubach was asked to step in as QB and DB.

Ryan did a nice job at DB, however his lack of game experience did hurt him a little on Offense.  Berwick held a 6-3 lead at the half but had to kick to Selinsgrove at the start of the 2nd half.  On 3 occasions Selinsgrove was in 3rd down situations and were lucky to convert. A long 2nd half opening drive put them up 10-6.

Berwick just could not get an offensive drive started and many times well into the 4th quarter the defense stopped the Seals time and again and were keeping the Dawgs in the game.  Eventually near the end of the game the Seals scored the clinching TD and walked away with a 17-6 victory

The good news for Berwick is they are still in 1st place in the District 2 standings and with a successful second half to the season can get as many as 3 home games for the district playoffs.

The temperature at kickoff for tonight’s Coughlin game is projected to be 62 degrees with a 7 mph westerly wind.  By the end of the game the temperature will be at 56 degrees with the same 7 mph wind. The game will be broadcast live on Classic Rock 103.5 by Jim Doyle and Andy Ulicny.

Coughlin started the season with two bad losses but is currently on a three game winning streak and comes into the game at 3-2 and is now is sitting 3rd in the District 2 AAAA standings.  There are 8 AAAA teams that qualify for the 1st round of playoffs and the first 4 will secure home games.  This is a very important game for both teams jostling for a good playoff position.

As of now it looks like Ryan Laubach will be tonight’s starting QB, but Damon Beckhorn should be available to play which could be a huge factor in this game.  One thing that Berwick still has to overcome is taking penalties during the game and could be a determining factor in tonight’s outcome.

Over the course of the last few weeks the Dawg Defense has played stellar and the kicking game has been much improved.  Enjoy the game tonight whether it be radio, or in person.  My opinion is you will see a great defensive performance tonight and it should help the Dawgs eventually pull away to a 2 or 3 score victory.  The Dawgs need to regain the momentum they had going into the Selinsgrove game.  The Dawg fans should have a nice trip home tonight with a cool crisp evening dropping temperatures into the upper 40’s by morning.
