    Nicholas Kalanick Jr., 80, of Freas Avenue, Berwick, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007, at his home. Born April 3, 1926, in Berwick, he was the son of the late Nicholas and Anastasia (Pawlechko) Kalanick.

    He was a member of Ss. Cyril and Methodius Ukrainian Catholic Church, Berwick.

    Mr. Kalanick was a 1944 graduate of Berwick Area Senior High School. He served as an electrician's mate 3rd class in the U.S. Navy from 1944-1946 in the Aleutian Islands. He was a 1950 graduate of Pfeiffer Junior College, receiving his bachelor's degree in education from Catawba College in 1952. He moved to Ellicott City, Md., where he began his teaching career. He also initiated the district's basketball program and, until the time of his death, he still remained in contact with his first team. He then worked for the Pa. Department of Health and Physical Education for two years. Later, he returned to Berwick to continue his passion for teaching and sports. He taught social studies, English, physical education, science and health throughout his career at the Berwick Junior High School.

    He was hired as head boys varsity basketball coach, achieving and continuing to hold, the highest winning percentage of any basketball coach for Berwick. He was also an assistant Berwick football coach for 16 years. He retired from the Berwick school district in 1983 with 30 years of service.

    In addition to his teaching career, Nick spent his summers directing a boys caddie camp at Eagles Mere Country Club.

    Nicholas was a great athlete with a gift for teaching and mentoring. Nicholas was inducted into the Berwick Sports Hall of Fame in 1990, and elected by popular vote of the Berwick sports fans, by the Berwick Rotary Club, as an All-Star All-Time Basketball Player.

    He truly influenced and touched many lives of his teammates, students and players. Among his memberships were the Mount Airy, Md.,VFW; the Berwick Catholic War Veterans and the Berwick Golf Club. Nick was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting, fishing and golf. He was known as one of the most prominent golfers in the area. He was also an accomplished artist in charcoal, pysanky and waterfowl carving.

    Despite being severely burned as a child, he grew up and had many accomplishments. Above all, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, and will be sadly missed by everyone.

    Preceding him in death was his daughter, Sharon Turock; five brothers: Max, John, Frank and William C. Kalanick Sr. and Michael Bores; along with three sisters: Mary Cronin, Helen Wilkens and Sara Taylor.

    Surviving is his wife of 53 years, the former Catherine Daniels; two daughters: Nancy, wife of Donald Fought of Bloomsburg, and Catherine, wife of Shawn Lawton of Downingtown; a son, Nicholas J. Kalanick of Berwick; six grandchildren: Katryna Fought of Bloomsburg; Zachary Fought of Florida; Kyle Nicholas and Rachel Anedith Kalanick, both of Berwick; and Keegan and Madison Lawton, both of Downingtown; two sisters: Nellie, wife of Robert Christopher of Berwick; and Martha, wife of Jack Walton of Berwick.

    A visitation will be held tonight from 6 to 9 from the Mayo Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Chestnut St., Berwick, where Parastas will be held at 7 p.m. Funeral services will begin at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday from the funeral home, followed by a Divine Liturgy at Ss. Cyril and Methodius Ukrainian Catholic Church, First Avenue and Warren Street, Berwick, at 10 a.m., with the Rev. John Seniw, his pastor, officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery, Berwick.

    In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the American Heart Association, 1704 Warren Ave., Williamsport, PA 17701 or the American Diabetes Association, 54 E. Elizabeth Ave., Suite 502, Bethlehem, PA 18018.
